Pyzel Surfboards started life in a small backyard shaping room on Hawaii’s North Shore in the mid-90s.
Since 1995, that humble space has grown into one of the most respected surfboard brands in the world, but the heart of what we do hasn’t changed: building boards we truly love to ride.

From Santa Barbara to the North Shore

Founder and shaper Jon Pyzel grew up in Santa Barbara, California. He began surfing in junior high and was instantly hooked. Local shaper Matt Moore took Jon under his wing, building his boards and inviting him onto his local surf team. In the shaping bay, Matt shared the fundamentals of board design and let Jon watch every step of the process, planting the seeds for a lifelong obsession with surfboards.

Chasing better waves and warmer water, Jon moved permanently to Oahu’s North Shore in 1992.
He started out fixing dings at Country Surfboards, learning the craft from the ground up as a ding repairer, hot coater, and laminator. Before long, he connected with master shaper Jeff Bushman, who offered guidance, honest feedback, and eventually a job as his back-shaper. That’s when Jon’s professional shaping journey truly began.

Meeting John John Florence

A defining moment came in 1997, when Alex Florence asked Jon to shape a board for her oldest son, John John, who was just five years old at the time. From that first board onward, Jon and John John worked side by side, pushing the boundaries of what young surfers could do.

Fast forward nearly 20 years and John John Florence is a 3× World Champion and widely considered one of the best surfers on the planet, riding Pyzel surfboards the whole way. For us, JJF is more than a team rider.
He’s a cornerstone of our brand thanks to his incredible surfing, invaluable feedback, loyalty, humility, gratitude, and positive outlook on life.

Why We Shape

We never set out to become a huge corporation or crank out as many “units” as possible.
We started Pyzel Surfboards because we love surfing and everything that comes with it:

• Traveling to new coastlines and cultures
• Building lifelong friendships in the water and in the shaping bay
• Chasing adventure and perfect waves
• And above all, designing and riding surfboards

A Family Brand with Global Reach

Today, Pyzel Surfboards is an international brand that’s still very much a family business.
Jon and his wife Dali live on the beach in Hawaii with their two daughters and help run
the Pyzel factories on the North Shore and in Oceanside, California.

Every board that leaves our factory is built with care. We take pride in helping each surfer find the right board for their waves, style, and goals. Alongside our Hawaii and California bases, we work with trusted licensees around the globe, and Jon regularly shapes in Australia, Europe, Brazil, Japan, Indonesia, South America, and California.
