Originally shaped around feedback from Nathan Florence requesting additional foam in his preferred step-up designs, The Tank evolved as a higher volume take on the Next Step. Named by Nathan himself, this model comes into play when standard shortboards no longer provide enough board for serious surf. From charging heavy waves at Shipsterns Bluff to tackling demanding conditions worldwide, The Tank is built for surfers looking for confidence, control, and performance when the swell steps up.
Proven in powerful heavy water environments by elite surfers, The Tank also feels perfectly suited to any lineup where a little extra foam, paddle power, and wave-catching ability make the difference - whether at your local spot or on a destination surf mission.
The Tank delivers everything expected from a true high-performance step-up:
✪ Extra volume positioned where it matters most - under the chest - maximizing paddle power for easier wave entry, earlier takeoffs, quicker exits from the impact zone, and less demanding paddle outs.
✪ Generous rocker designed for a high-performance response in larger, more powerful surf. It maintains the familiar feel of a shortboard while adding extra drive and hold for committed surfing in critical conditions. The rocker profile also improves control on late drops and supports confident progression.
✪ Refined rails and a thinner tail relative to overall board thickness, allowing this higher-volume shape to retain the responsiveness of a more sensitive board. At speed, clean rail engagement matters - avoiding overly thick, boggy rails that can reduce control or compromise your bottom turn.
✪ Recommended sizing ranges from 2" to 10" longer than your regular shortboard, paired with an additional ¼" to ⅜" of thickness (increasing progressively with added length). In bigger surf, extra foam remains a key advantage.
✪ Available with a 5-fin setup, giving you the flexibility to fine-tune your fin configuration according to wave type and surf conditions.
