The Power Tiger was developed in collaboration with John John Florence as a board designed to sit between the Red Tiger and the Ghost in terms of wave size and performance range. Building on the Red Tiger - originally refined with John John for high-performance surfing in smaller, weaker waves - the Power Tiger introduces key design updates to handle more powerful surf while maintaining responsiveness and control.
The Red Tiger remains John John Florence’s preferred board for slower waves in the head-high-and-under range, whereas the Power Tiger becomes the natural step up when conditions gain more size, power, and speed.
The most visible evolution is in the outline. Both the nose and tail have been pulled in, increasing the overall curve of the board. This adjustment plays a major role in how the Power Tiger performs under pressure.
A narrower tail improves hold at high speed and through committed rail turns, reducing the tendency to slide during hard bottom turns. The added curve in the tail section also increases looseness and control in tighter, more critical parts of the wave.
The refined nose outline allows the board to fit more easily into hollow, more concave wave faces without catching, while the continuous curve of the outline enhances responsiveness and makes the board easier to project into the lip at speed.
Rail volume has also been reduced. Thinner rails allow for deeper engagement on faster, more powerful waves, improving control when on rail and reducing unwanted resistance. This also enhances performance in barrels and supports longer, more committed carving turns.
Subtle refinements to the bottom rocker further enhance performance, including added curve through the last 18 inches of the tail. This increases looseness, improves rail-to-rail transitions at speed, and strengthens overall hold through turns.
The Power Tiger is intended for conditions where the Red Tiger begins to feel under-gunned. It can be ridden at the same length as the Red Tiger with slightly reduced volume, or slightly longer with a marginally narrower outline. Standard dimensions are approximately 1/4 inch narrower and 1/16 inch thinner than equivalent Red Tiger sizes.
