Jon has developed a wide range of mid-length variations, most of them custom orders for surfers in Japan. More recently, he has focused on refining a particular design, shaping it for close friends and a small group of selected customers. The feedback has been consistently strong, leading to the decision to expand this concept and make this interpretation of a mid-length available to a wider audience.
The Mid Length Crisis is built for effortless paddling, while remaining lively, responsive, and free in the water. It features a semi-traditional outline with a wide point forward, creating a sleek, performance-oriented curve that promotes speed and drive along the face, while still carrying enough volume for stability and glide in softer, slower conditions.
A refined foil runs continuously from nose to tail, combining a rolled deck that preserves volume through the center for easier paddling, with progressively thinned rails that enhance sensitivity and hold when engaging rail.
The rocker is a smooth, moderate, continuous curve from tip to tail, without abrupt changes or exaggerated kick. This creates efficient paddling speed and supports natural acceleration, sustained flow, and controlled, fluid turning across a wide range of speeds.
Underneath, the bottom contours blend a subtle vee with double concave - often referred to in older terminology as a Spiral Vee. This configuration encourages easy rail-to-rail transitions, allowing the board to roll smoothly through turns and maintain connected, predictable flow for surfers of all levels.
The fin setup is a 2+1 configuration with a single fin box, offering the choice between classic single-fin glide or increased drive and hold with small side bites. Stock glassing comes in at 4oz on the bottom and a 6+4oz deck layup, adding durability and a touch of extra weight for strength and stability.
The Mid Length Crisis brings a fresh dimension to any quiver, offering a different approach to familiar waves and expanding the range of how they can be surfed.
